One amazing Digital Controller

We finally got our hands on the Denon MC3000, their new digital DJ controller and to say we are impressed is an understatement. So lets start from the beginning, this is the baby brother to Denon’s older MC6000, still offering 4 decks in the space of 2 whilst cutting down on clutter and cost. The MC3000 offers nearly everything the MC6000 does but fits it all into a smaller case, cleans up the layout slightly and as a result makes it easier to use and for newer DJs to get into.

Denon are increasingly rivalling Pioneer in the DJ equipment quality states and the MC3000 is no exception. Its heavy but its a nice weight, you know this piece of kit will take a battering getting lugged between gigs and will still work just as good as the day you bought it. Everything about it screams quality from the smooth action of the faders which we’ll get into more later to how simple it is to set up.

The MC3000 comes with Tractor in Europe and Virtual DJ in the states, no idea why but they both work pretty similar. Setting up takes minutes. One usb lead into your laptop and another lead into the power socket and you’re away. Setting up Traktor to work with the MC3000 is a snap, it instantly recognises it from the drop down menu and allows you to tweak some of the options or carry on with the defaults. Using Traktor itself is pretty simple but if you’ve never touched it before it basically mimics the look and layout of the MC3000.

The controller is small, not as small as some digital controllers out there but we’d probably say is the perfect size. Denon use smaller jogwheels than most to allow for smaller units but they don’t lose any of the functionality of bigger johwheels. Expect the same sort of functionality such as scratching or touching the sides to nudge. The faders are silky smooth, at the very least as good as the faders on Pioneers mixers if not slightly better, they are that good. Everything else has a nice textured rubberised feel and the buttons have a nice clickyness to them. Don’t forget the lights either, this is filled with LEDs so you know whats selected and what isn’t.

The headphone jack is on the front of the unit which is what we prefer and apart from that the front is clean. The microphone socket is at the back kept out of the way and is positioned directly behind the microphone controls. The main difference between this and the MC6000 is there are only two physical channels instead of 4 which depending on your preference for clutter is a good thing. You can still do some video mixing which is a lovely extra as VJs become more popular and means its more versatile than other controllers out there.

At the top you’ve got a number of effects banks and cue buttons giving you a lot of scope to mess with your mix on the fly. This controller has almost everything you’d want and more and its something which Denon, much like Pioneer do well, offering you exactly what you want but giving you enough toys to have some extra fun. The back of the unit is pretty simple, apart from the microphone jack, and usb lead you have two balanaced outs, two unblanaced outs and two line ins. The line ins are a great extra, allowing you to plug in an ipod to help with your mixing or in case the worst happens with your laptop at that crucial moment.

Like most controllers you can navigate the library through the software or through the controller. Everything is kept compact in a small area in the center of the controller so accidents shouldn’t happen and it means you don’t get crossed arms trying to mix and control a mouse at the same time. As mentioned the jogwheels live up to their bigger brothers, you have a vinyl mode allowing scratch djs to do their things but non scratch djs will find they are perfect for navigating tracks. They feel nice and tight instead of loose and can be disabled by DJs who would prefer not to use them which is a nice touch.

You also have all the expected mixer controls per channel and some tight filter controls. As with most Denon DJ equipment the filters are lovely to use and you won’t have any complaints about using them.

For DJs who like to use looping options you are more than catered for with manual loop in/out and an auto looping option which allows you to speed up or slow down the loop.

But the main point of this controller is you can control up to 4 decks at once. Whilst there is only enough controls to control 2 at any one time you can have up to 4 decks ready to mix into. Swapping decks is as simple as selecting which deck you want loaded up without affecting the other decks playing in the background. It takes a small bit of practise compared to the MC6000 which had controls for all 4 decks but we think it works better having less clutter on the controller.

This is a very well rounded controller, meant for mobile DJs as well as beginners. We can especially see it being used at parties or weddings but bedroom and club djs will certainly find a use for it and won’t be disappointed. If you are after a professional digital controller then this is easy to recommend, recommending it above the MC6000 is slightly tougher as they are both as good as each other. In fact the MC3000 improves on the MC6000 in a few areas such as layout but its too close to judge for most DJs, if you feel the need to control 4 decks at once all the time as well as more comprehensive microphone options it has to be the MC6000 but apart from that we couldn’t recommend one over the other as there is not much in it.

Either way which ever one you pick up you won’t regret it, we love the MC3000 and can see many top DJs using these in the future.

Become a Professional DJ now!

Theres different types of DJs, bedroom DJs, mobile DJs, Club DJs so when we say professional DJ we mean someone touring the world, making tonnes of money and living the dream. Who wouldn’t want to play in places like Ibiza all the time at the biggest clubs or touring the world at some of the biggest gigs? What about working in the studio with some of the biggest and best producers and DJs out there? How about being friends with the likes of Tiesto and Pete Tong? Finally what about earning lots of money. All that there is the dream.

Now obviously you won’t go from bedroom DJ to superstar professional DJ in a weekend but you should always have something to aspire to.

It’s well known that to become a professional, world touring DJ that you need to produce your own tracks. We’ve discussed this in another article before. Making tracks is hard but fun and rewarding but even more of a challenge is promoting them and hopefully getting them signed to a record label.

Just look on myspace or beatport and you’ll see millions of other djs and musicians creating music. Record labels are swamped with music, more than they can handel so getting an AR manager to listen to your tracks is almost impossible. Just getting your track into their hands is hard enough without them choosing your track over thousands of other submissions.

If you are lucky enough to have your track picked, don’t except Ibiza Clubland Hits Volume 3 style advertising. You are an unknown and even if your track reaches #1 on Beatport, within a week it’ll be lost in between the millions of other tracks on the service. That means whilst you made a #1 selling track, it didn’t have long to make a lot of its money.

You’re now probably thinking that you’ve wasted all this time making, promoting and releasing a track and making no money off it. That’s true for now as an unknown DJ but things will change if you become known. You’ll need to carry on making more, better tracks but don’t go submitting to every label you can, stick with one label. They will release all your tracks, people will find your older stuff easier and they’ll be more interested in helping you with future releases if you have an exclusive deal with them.

The more tracks you make that are successful for them, the more they will spend on marketing, giving you both more sales and more money with your name becoming more recognised.

But with thousands of labels out there, who do you go with? A big label is the only choice. Sure small labels may offer you better rates or promote you more but they won’t have the time or money to back you in a bigger way. You want a label that can get behind its DJs and develop them further, a label that has a marketing budget to promote you to the top.

It all sounds pretty easy so far but a big label won’t be interested in some random DJ they’ve never heard of before. You need to start getting your first tracks onto other labels with similar styles of music. You need to promote yourself as a DJ and producer and make these first tracks a success. Once they are getting attention you can then approach one of the larger record labels with your tracks and show off what you have achieved so far and where you are heading towards.

Just like you, record labels are out to make money so if you take the offer for very little commission in exchange for promoting you as a DJ being signed to their label they’ll be more keen to promote you than if you were taking a much larger cut of the profits. Once you have your name out there and start getting booked to DJ gigs, thats where you’ll make most of your money and have all the fun of the lifestyle as well.

Now one last thing we missed out on. There is a way to get AR managers to listen to your tracks. Competitions. Websites, DJ stores and magazines often offer the chance to get your music heard by AR managers. Just hand your CD in at the right time and you will have saved yourself a lot of time and effort but it doesn’t mean your track will get picked, only listened to.

Good luck with your quest to become a professional DJ and don’t forget to check out our other DJing guides.

Play your music anytime, anywhere. Have you ever looked at the mess of cables behind your decks and thought to yourself, If only everything was wireless, it’d save so much hassle with tangled wires? Well Hercules have been listening to your thoughts and have announced a brand new range of wireless speakers at this years CES in Las Vegas.

Hercules are known as an audio specialist and as the creators of the first DJ console for computers, featuring built-in audio, the first multi-channel surround sound cards for PC and the XPS 101 speakers – all of which have received rave reviews for their sound quality. They are now taking this know how along with their extensive wireless expertise and making wireless speaker systems.

These new speakers are not just for DJs who want a few less wires around their room but for people who want to listen to music on a mobile device or have different set ups in different rooms and want them to all go to the same set of speakers.

“With this brand new range of products, our goal is to respond to the evolution of usage, as well as to the convergence of users’ electronic devices, with respect to music,” explains Agnès Cornière, Worldwide Marketing Director for the Guillemot Corporation Group. “Via their computer or via their smartphone, users want to be able to easily listen to and control their favorite music in the comfort of their home, while enjoying a quality audio experience. This is a transgenerational phenomenon these days, which is why our teams have created a complete line of products.”

Hercules has created a fully mobile 2.0 system, boasting a staggering battery life and a stylish design.

For those with smartphones:

They’re looking for a speaker that will meet the mobility of their phone and easily move from room to room. For these users, Hercules is creating a series of wireless audio solutions – equipped with Bluetooth™ technology – which can easily be controlled via their smartphone.

Want to Learn How To DJ?

You’ve come to the right website about DJing, now hopefully you’ve picked up a couple of DJ T-Shirts and want to become a DJ. Being a DJ can be quick and easy but with lots to learn. It can be tough to start though, do you get vinyl turntables or CDJs. How do you mix. What do you need to do to get started?

Here is our simple guide to becoming a DJ.

1. Decide what type of music you want to DJ. Do you like House music? Rock? Hiphop? This will determine what equipment you need to buy.

2. Go to a DJ store and try out some DJ equipment that fits your budget. Ask for advice relating to your music style.

3. Check out our youtube channel where you’ll find lots of DJ tutorial videos and equipment reviews.

4. Practise beatmatching and mixing.

5. Work on and create your best demo mix.

6. Get practise at friends house parties, clubs, raves or where ever you can DJ. Give your demo mix to a promoter and other people at parties.

Sounds pretty simple and thats because it is. However it’s easy to get stuck and struggle for months when learning to become a DJ.

Don’t try to learn by yourself how to DJ, follow our tips, tutorials and video tutorials. Following a book can be hard but by seeing how it’s done in our videos you can mimic and practise. Ignore advice from message board DJs, if they were superstar DJs they would not have time to post on a message board. Do meet up with other DJs and learn and practise with them.

Learning by yourself is the hardest way to fail so take your time watching our videos and learning from other DJs. You’ll have a lot of fun and pick things up quicker. As we said at the start it’s pretty easy to become a DJ but will take years of practise to learn and master everything.
