How to Clean a Turntable Stylus

Stylus’ or Stylii are expensive. But they are the most important piece of your turntable equipment. Without them you wouldn’t be able to hear the record. So it is wise to keep them clean and well looked after.

But how do you clean them? You have to be careful because they are small and very delicate. You’ll need a Stylus Cleaning Brush and a stylus cleaning solution. Do not use any type of brush or cloth to clean your stylus as you’ll only damage it. So make sure you have a proper stylus cleaning brush.

If you still have your cartridge manual then follow the instructions there. Every Stylus is slightly different and may need to be cleaned differently. If you don’t have the manual proceed with caution when cleaning but these tips should help.

Be very gentle when cleaning with the stylus tip, if you bend it you make break your stylus forever, they are very delicate. Using your stylus brush, brush toward you, from the back to the front of the stylus.

Use your stylus cleaning solution and carry on brushing. Once you have cleaned the dirt off leave to dry, do not use it whilst it is wet as you may damage your records.
