We keep going on and on about how amazing Pioneer are from the CDJs to their headphones. Anyone would think they were paying us to say all of this. If only it was true. Pioneer over the last 10 years have taken the digital DJing arena by storm and stayed at the top far longer than anyone thought they would. Now we have the RMX-1000 effects unit, also known as the Remix Station aiming to keep Pioneer once again ahead of the curve.
Pioneer released the EFX500 a few years ago to great critical and public acclaim and are now taking that and expanding it into a single dedicated FX unit that uses its own beat detection to keep in time with the music. The RMX is a device for enhancing DJ performances with its ability to create and add a variety of new and unique remix effects, as well as rhythmic sampling capabilities. The RMX-1000 incorporates four remixing functions: Isolate FX, Scene FX, X-Pad FX and Release FX for simple musical arrangements with intuitive control, all accessible at the user’s fingertips.
This product will live and die on its beat detection and in our tests it performs brilliantly. Whilst older EFX units relied on the DJ being perfectly in sync the RMX-1000 takes out that hard work and leaves you alone to concentrate on mixing as well as adding effects. Pioneer will offer downloads of presets by DJs Chuckie, Kissy Sell Out, Kutski, James Zabiela, Doorly, and Laidback Luke in the future giving you a chance to be a bit more like your favourite DJs.
The RMX-1000 comes equipped with an internal sample playback section with four banks and four voices per bank. There is also pitch control and independent volume level to play with too. The four main functions of the unit are:
Isolate FX which will allow you to control the hi, low and mid frequencies with kill and filter effects.
X-Pad FX which allows you to manipulate and add samples as well as loading and saving sounds and effects. It also works as a beat machine so you can add in kicks, snare, claps as well as your own effects.
Release FX removes the program signal, leaving only the effect. This allows you to transition out of a song by using vinyl break, echo or spin back and allows you to control the speed of the effect too.
Scene FX lets you choose between 5 build up or break down effects including echo, reverb, spiral and more. This is controlled by the large rotary knob on the right of the unit.
As expected this tiny unit is extremely well made, laid out and gorgeous to look at. Buttons light up to let you know when they are on and everything works with Remix Box, a piece of software that comes with the device. There’s a slot on the side of the device for an SD card to load in your effects.
Using the unit is a snap, everything is laid out well with each section being separated and the buttons are large enough to stop you making mistakes but small enough to not take over the unit. The knobs all have a great feel to them and being large you’ll never have to worry about twisting them. With Wet/Dry modes and everything handled on the pads and knobs you can create some truly unique effects.
If you’ve been looking for an Effects unit then this has to be the go to model now. Being able to add your own effects as well as save them out means this has unlimited potential and will truly add to any DJ set.
